On  20 May 2000, the Fort Lauderdale Coast Guard Station hosted invited members of the Power Squadrons in Broward County to a demonstration on the use of signaling flares, life preservers and fire extinguishers.  D/Lt Roger Imhoff, JN, as Safety Officer for Coral Ridge was present to demonstrate the newley approved offshore automatic inflating PFDs.
A luncheon followed the demonstrations.

Roger Imhof talks to the group about the different kinds of PFD's while wearing a "SOSpenders" autoinflating preserver.

Different kinds of preservers are tried on by the attendees.

Roger demonstrates the SOSpenders after inflation.

The group then moves out to the dock for flare and extinquisher demonstrations...

A military "Pen-Gun" flare is demonstrated, followed by a standard civilian day/night flare.

A military parachute flare is demonstrated.  With this flare one part becomes a firing pin and the other half is the launching mechanism.  Several were fired off in demonstration

A hand- held night flare is demonstrated.

Members of the group were then given a chance to fire off flares.

A day smoke flare is demonstrated.

... and it is also used as the subject of extinquisher practice!

Following the demonstration the group retired to the "Mess Hall"  for a barbeque lunch provided by the Coast Guard.  The demonstration provided the attendees an excellent opportunity  to see routine safety gear in use.  We thank Ft. Lauderdale's Coast Guard Base and Ft. Lauderdale Coast Guard Commander Lt. Nicol Nancarrow  - who is also an honorary member of Coral Ridge Power Squadron - for sponsoring this event.
